Arthur E. Teal
1881 - 1927
Arthur Teal was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1881. After studying for a time in the east, Teal spent four years in Scotland and England studying antique models, continually striving to get new ideas and develop originality. Upon his return to the United State he became identified with Stickley Brothers, and was involved in originating their Quaint” style of furniture. His designs were drawn in water colors with the proper setting and coloring so that the piece could be seen as it would appear in the setting for which it was planned. His early work as an interior decorator was evident in the showrooms of Stickley Brothers. He designed for Stickley Brothers from 1908-’11, 1920-’24, 1927-’36, and Stow Davis from 1918-1919. He also did freelance work, and was a member of the Grand Rapids Furniture Designers’ Association. Mr. Teal passed away in 1927.
