Red Side Chair
Herman Miller Inc. - 1946 - 1958
Charles Eames designed the red, molded plywood chair for Herman Miller Inc. The wood finish of the chair is resin impregnated. The seat, back, and legs are molded plywood. The parts of the chair seem to hover in space, aparently independent, but obviously connected.

| Notes | Measurements: 28 ½” high, 19 ½” wide, 20” deep, seat is 18” high. Marilyn and Donald Kooiman donated the chair to the Grand Rapids Public Museum in 1986. Information from Herman Miller Inc. “The red chair was in our line from 1946 to 1958. The chair was also available in mahogany, rosewood, oak, avodire, canaletta, slunkskin, leather, yellow, black, birch, calico, ash, zebrawood, teak, fabric of the customer’s choice, and walnut. The chair was offered in two heights—dining and lounge. In 1985 at Worldesign 85 in Washinton. D.C., Charles Eames was recognized as being the most influential designer of the Twentieth Century by his peers from I.D.S.A. and its international affiliates.” The chair was exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in 1947. |
