Karl F. Schmidt
1899 - 1961
Karl Schmidt, a prominent freelance designer, started his career with designer George Pike at John D. Raab Furniture Company and then under John Samuelson at Berkey & Gay Furniture Company. In 1933 Mr. Schmidt opened his own office and designed the Hekman Furniture Company line for 25 years. He toured Europe for a short time as a representative of the Grand Rapids Furniture Manufacturers’ Association. He was a member and past president of the Grand Rapids Furniture Designers Association, 1951. Mr. Schmidt died on January 11, 1961 at the age of 62.
