Fred C. Ruppel

1883 - 1959

Fred Ruppel, Grand Rapids sculptor and artist, began drawing with his father when four years old. At the age of six, his father introduced him to the chisel. At thirteen he could take a piece of furniture and make a full scale working drawing. At sixteen he was admitted to the Philadelphia Woodcarvers Union. In Grand Rapids he fashioned the eagle atop the central World War II memorial pillar in Veterans’ Memorial Park. He was a freelance designer of appliance manufacturers and automobile ornaments. Mr. Ruppel died on December 27, 1959.
