Herman L. Holmberg

1874 - 1972

Herman Holmberg was born in Sweden on July 12, 1874, and came to Grand Rapids with his family at the age of fifteen years. As a young man he worked as a wood carver. He later taught manual arts in the city schools until the former Davis Vocational Technical High School opened in 1920. There he taught furniture design, history of furniture, and sculpture courses until the school closed in 1944. He was a life member of the Grand Rapids Furniture Designers Association and a member of the Grand Rapids Retired teachers Club. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to industrial education, he was made an honorary life member of the Michigan Industrial Education Society. Mr. Holmberg died May 22, 1972.
